Urban solitude, especially Manhattan solitude, is a special phenomenon. Small windows opening onto air shafts, minuscule fire escape balconies, walls which have been painted thick, with generations of colours. It is a world of tungsten light and spare poetry, colour too intense for one's senses and murky shadows. This group of images is from a fourth floor walk-up on Amsterdam Avenue (also known as Tenth Avenue), Manhattan.
